poem

cicadas sing even during these hot afternoons
before the rains rinse their songs
and shake them rattle-clean
i pretend
to want to catch one and cage him like i think the japanese do (ah, they've just now stopped)
that i'd make him happy (locked up)
and he would sing for me
instead
i will listen for evening
i will listen for their vespers
